In honor of the great explorer, my husband Jeff and I decided to go on our own adventure this weekend to Big Bear Lake here in California.
Big Bear is about 2 hours northeast of Los Angeles and is nestled in the San Bernadino National Forest. Originally a gold mining mecca in the 1800′s, it’s now a popular four season resort.
We rented a log cabin next to the water and set off on our adventure Friday afternoon. It’s been dreadfully hot in L.A. over the past week so it was an indescribable feeling when we first rolled down the windows upon arrival up in the mountains; crisp, clean fall weather on your skin.
Saturday was absolutely gorgeous so we decided to take a hike with Stella. We passed a sign for ‘Grays Peak Trail’ and decided it was destined for us. We got in a little over our heads as the trail was 3 miles up hill to the peak. However, it was totally worth all the pain once we reached the top and looked out over the view.
Afterwards we decided to cool down by doing a little cliff jumping near the dam at China Rocks. The water was chilly but not bad once you were in!
On Sunday we rented a boat and toured through the lake which was a great way to end our Big Bear adventure. We both hope to go back this Winter when it’s snowy to do some skiing. I also may try doing a helicopter shoot of the lifts but you will have to stay tuned for that…
Happy Columbus Day!
